The Gateway House program is expanding! Spots in the Gateway houses are in high demand, accruing a waitlist of young adults desiring a stable place to mature, save money, and work on life goals. In response to the need for more spots, Agape added a new women’s Gateway house this past February. There are already four women living in the new house with plans to move in more within the next few months. Agape hopes to see the same positive transformations with the new residents, as they have seen in other Gateway participants.
One example of these positive transformations is Mack. He has been involved with Agape since he was a teenager. By the time Mack was 18, he was no longer in high school and did not have a job. This past summer, Mack moved into the Gateway house at 19 years old. Despite having no high school degree or work experience, Mack persevered and got a job at a local restaurant within two months of moving in! Yet when rent was due, he surprisingly didn’t have the funds to pay it. The adult program director, Jessie Riggs, checked in with him. She discovered that he spent his paycheck on a brand new phone. Mack wasn’t making great decisions with his newfound freedom and money. Jessie Riggs and Kirk Craig had a conversation with Mack about what was expected from him as part of the program. Typically when a 19 year old is given rules and high expectations, they quit restricting programs. However, this was not the case with Mack.
Mack took this opportunity to work on his trustworthiness. He started faithfully attending weekly GED classes. He began weekly meetings to read the Bible with Taylor Trepinski, a Frontline Ministry Associate. He pays his rent and keeps up with the demanding hours of his restaurant job. Mack has become more independent in the ten months he’s lived in a Gateway house. As new adults come into the program, Mack has gone above and beyond, helping two new residents get jobs at the restaurant he works for. Now, Mack is 20 years old and is an example of independence to his peers.
