BBC enjoyed a great week the 11th through the 13th of January. We were able to play outside on the 11th, swinging and playing dodge ball. The 11th we received news that several children from a family that faithfully attend BBC had received an eviction notice, and that Tuesday may have been their last day coming. Such is the life of a child born into poverty. Nothing is sure. Nothing is stable or steadfast, from school to home to family. Tuesday we gathered up and announced the children were moving, that we love them and that we’d miss them.
I rejoice that, for a time, those children had an after-school program to look forward to; a rock solid group of friends and mentors who came together at least twice a week every week; supervision and structure that they could count on to be there for them through everything else. This is BBC’s mission. This is its heartbeat, to provide top notch afterschool care to children and their families regardless of circumstance, to facilitate encounters with nurturing mentors for children who grow up with so few.
