In the summer of 2011, Jasmine lived a few blocks from Agape Development. Every day, her younger brother would come home from a day out with a big smile on his face. She asked him what he was doing that day and he told her that he had attended Agape’s Vacation Bible School. This sparked Jasmine’s curiosity! She was interested in learning more about the Bible and was excited to see if she could join. She began walking her brother to and from Agape each day. She noticed that the kids at Vacation Bible School were younger than her. Jasmine was thirteen years old and almost a freshman in high school. She wondered if Agape offered anything for teens. Her question was answered when Melissa Hill approached her one afternoon. Melissa told her that there was a new group for teen girls, a Bible study called Serenity. This is what Jasmine had hoped for!
Jasmine came to Serenity and met other teen girls from the neighborhood. At Serenity she learned about accountability, discipleship, and other spiritual disciplines. She made friends with other teens and helped form a Godly community. Older women mentored her. She began the spiritual discipline of daily journaling her prayers to God. Soon, Jasmine was the teen that the other girls looked up to. She became a leader in the teen community. Jasmine did 4 years with Serenity and headed to The University of North Texas in 2015. She even took her journal, desiring to further develop her faith and leadership skills.
At the end of her freshman year, Jasmine thought about how she would spend her summer at home. She could get a part-time job and make money for herself. She could hang out at home and relax after a difficult school year. Or she could spend her summer giving back to her community by working for Camp Agape. Jasmine chose community leadership. This June and July, Jasmine has been on staff with Agape leading a group of elementary school girls. When asked about her summer, Jasmine said the best part was being a mentor to the younger girls, as well as being a positive example to her teen peers. We are so happy to have had Jasmine as a teen in our program. She grew to be on leadership with Agape and invested back into her community.
