Renae Peters brought her grandchildren to Agape’s summer camp in 2013. This is where she met Jessie Riggs, and was invited to attend the Getting Ahead class. She quickly signed up! This course enabled her to examine personal and communal experiences of poverty. She assessed her own resources and learned how to build those resources and move toward self-sufficiency. After Getting Ahead, all participants are paired with an ally, a volunteer to walk alongside them as participants strive for the goals they set during Getting Ahead. Renae was paired with Lori Johnson, wife of board member Chip Johnson. Lori had been very curious about Agape’s mission – so she decided to volunteer with Allies. Lori and Renae developed a deep relationship. They encouraged one another and became as close as sisters. During this time, Renae was volunteering at Agape’s Backyard Bible Club; she persuaded Lori to join her. Cheerfully, Lori came with Renae to volunteer at BBC. Renae and Lori are still great friends, and Lori now serves on the Agape Board of Directors – she fully believed in Agape’s mission and wanted to remain involved.
Several years later, Renae is still very involved with Agape. She ministers to the escorts on the street corners, praying for them and telling them about Jesus. In the summer of 2016, Renae worked on staff at Camp Agape. Every day, she supervised the third to fifth grade girls, leading them in scripture memorization and chaperoning field trips. She even started attending a few young adult fellowships to be acquainted with young adults in the neighborhood. Renae was clearly a valuable asset to the Agape team. She was spending several hours a week doing direct ministry! With fall programs approaching, Agape decided the best thing to do would be to hire Renae. She deserved to be paid for all of her leadership and participation. Now, Renae leads a small group of 3rd graders every day at BBC. On Wednesday nights, Renae co-teaches Getting Ahead, that same catalytic class that got her involved with Agape. Renae is a person of joy and faith and she is a great person to have around the office. She’s always smiling, and always has something inspiring to share. We are very grateful God brought her to Agape!
