Corisha, a resident of Gateway, Agape’s young adult housing program, coerced her high school best friend to apply for the program. She thought it would be good for her friend, Samantha to grow in her independence, leadership skills, and relationship with God. Samantha said yes and was admitted into the program. She had no idea how much the program would actually help her develop. A month later, Corisha invited Samantha to the Agape Women’s Retreat. Samantha agreed to come and was excited to spend the weekend relaxing in a spa-like atmosphere. She was very surprised when she arrived at the retreat! Instead of a luxurious hotel room, she was sharing a cabin with other women – and most surprising of all – there was no wifi! Samantha became apprehensive about what this weekend entailed. Fortunately, God drew near to Samantha and used the book of Hosea to show His love for her and how His boundaries in Scripture are because of that love. She left the retreat with the goal of growing in her relationship with Christ. Since then, Samantha has been faithfully attending the Gateway women’s Bible study every week. The past few months, the woman studied the book of Ruth – learning to trust God with unpleasant circumstances.
One unpleasant circumstance Samantha endures is having to ride the bus to work. The bus takes her over an hour to get to work each morning. Instead of complaining or choosing to waste money on other transport options, Samantha decided to use her commute to spend time with God. She opened her Bible to Genesis and started reading and praying on the bus each day. Today, she is already in Deuteronomy and knows more about the Bible than she ever thought possible. Samantha demonstrates Jesus to her roommates by planning fun activities to increase the unity in the house. She befriends everyone and shows respect in all circumstances. Agape is blessed to have Samantha in our community.
