HIS League is a collaboration between Agape Development, Generation One, The Forge for Families, Cornerstone, and several other Houston faith-based organizations, to bring sports to the youth of Houston’s under-served areas. Agape sports ministry provides consistent mentoring, strong discipleship, and positive reinforcement that result in a true desire for a stronger relationship with Jesus Christ.
After each game, the coaches teach a Bible lesson. The youth learn about principles that apply to sportsmanship, as well as life; such as discipline, respect, and teamwork. Last season, the 4th & 5th grade boy’s flag football team was given the task to come up with a team motto. The boys remembered the Bible lesson on Luke6:27. “Love your enemies! Do good to those who [hurt] you.” They began to practice loving their opponents. If the quarterback on the other team tripped, one of the Agape receivers was the first one to help him up. If an Agape teammate was upset with a referee’s call, his teammates would remind him to “do good” rather than pick a fight.
At Agape, our hope is that the lessons these lessons from sports can be applied to situations later in life. Little boys will grow up to be men who extend grace and mercy when wronged. Little girls will grow into women who encourage one another. Anger, mistrust, and low self esteem will not plague our communities when these children are the Christ-following independent leaders of the neighborhood.
