For the past 3 years, Agape has offered a 12-month residential program called Gateway, whose purpose is to launch 18-25 year-olds into healthy, Christ-following independence. Jonathan Steele, Emily DeLong, and David Hill run the program and have been making great improvements for the 2011-2012 year. Our first major change is adding internships: We are looking for local business who will provide unpaid work and learning opportunities for our residents 2 days per week for 10-16 weeks, where an 18-25 year-old adult will put into practice the habits of hard work, communication, and service at your place of business. Our second major change is a partnership with the WorkFaith Connection to provide job readiness and placement for our residents. WorkFaith focuses exclusively on this aspect of job development, thus allowing Agape to put time and energy into discipleship, life-skills, and personal growth. The third major change is to shorten the program from 12 months to 4 months. We find that adult residents are eager to prove their independence as soon as possible. Housing residents longer than needed produces an environment much like a college graduate’s moving back home with parents. The relationship becomes strained, whereas independence makes everyone more appreciative of the relationship. We believe this will be our best Gateway Program ever, and we cannot wait to get started.
